GForce M-Tron Pro (Virtual Mellotron Plug-In) Review

Forget those Mellotron sample CDs that only give you choirs, strings and that flute sound the Beatles used. Forget soft synths that provide maybe 20-30 patches. If you are a fan of the Mellotron then this is what you want. Sure it has all the standard sounds you would expect, but there's tons more. This baby carries over 700 different sounds in almost 200 "tape banks" of just about everything you can think of. Strings, choirs, sound effects, lo-fi loops, wind and brass instruments, percussive sounds, organs, guitars... you get the idea?

It's like having the sound set of a digital sampler, but coming the classic reel tape technology of the Mellotron. They made this collection not just from the classic Mark I and II from the early 60's, but also the Model 300 and 400 from the late 60's, the Mark V from 1975, the Novatron from the 80's, even the 8-track tape Birotron from the late 70's. So you're getting at least eight generations of the Mellotron in this package.

The interface is a good deal better than what most emulators give, and much better than the original hardware. The initial GUI is like the classic 'tron hardware with controls for volume, pitch and tuning with also patch select buttons. An additional GUI gives you much expanded capabilities like sound layering, LFO controls, multi layered envelope and amp filters, dual channel delay, chorusing and more. The stuff you can make with just this one instrument is really cool.

Now the downside on all this coolness is it's a bit pricey for what is technically a sample playback application with simple editing. The manufacturer web site (.....) lists the emulator at 139.00 euros, which puts it at around $200 U.S. currency. If you are serious about this instrument this is the best collection you can get.
