I got the version without disks, because I still had some old 1TB disks sitting around. As I installed them first, things looked fine, but then the disks failed (no surprise. Probably the reason I had them sitting on the shelf).

Now I got 4 new 1TB disks, and they work great. Adding disks works like a charm. Just be ready that it can take a day to rebuild the array after you add a disk (but the array is usable while you do this). It is very speedy, and easy to use. Works with iTunes and works as a Timecapsule. Lots of features!

Netgear support on the other hand is useless. I called them initially when I had the problems with the bad disks. It went as far as having to given them access to my desktop via remote control software so they can access the device, and then putting the device in "support" mode but they never connected to it. Luckily things worked fine after swapping the bad drives.

Don't forget to upgrade the firmware before using it "for real". It is quiet, but sits in a rack with noisy servers.

Pros: size, low power, ease of use, features
Cons: a bit pricey, bad support, seems to require windows to get started.

Being a current and very happy owner of an ASUS Netbook ASUS Eee PC 1001PXD-MU17-WT 10.1-Inch Netbook (White) I thought this would make a nice gift for my brother who just moved 300 miles from me so we could keep in touch by Skype. Before I let him have it, I spent a few days using it and getting it set up and making sure everything worked. I like this so much it's now on my wish list for ME.

My first dilemma is whether to call this a notebook or a netbook because of the processor being more similar to what is found in a netbook. It's like a netbook processor-wise, but larger like a notebook.

Build-quality seems to be very good to excellent - my only complaint is the CD/DVD drawer seems flimsy when opening/closing, but I am very careful with it. Even while closed, this note/netbook looks good with the dark espresso brown exterior and a lot of it seems to be made of aluminum. It's lightweight (under 6 lbs. with the battery installed), and has a power-saving feature so the 6 cell battery gets pretty close to 5 hours of battery life like the specifications state. The touch-pad is very responsive, although I prefer using a mouse. There are 3 USB 2.0 ports.

Even though the 1.6 GHz speed is on the slow side (after all this is a fairly inexpensive PC) having 4 GB of RAM is more than enough for internet, Word and Excel functions, email, and it has better graphics than my smaller netbook has. In addition, this has an internal DVD drive, unlike my Asus Netbook. For just a little more money over what you'd spend on the 10" model, you get it all with this.

Asus puts a lot of bloatware on this, which is easily uninstalled. Set-up was very easy and this comes with Windows 7 Home Premium, in addition to Microsoft Word and Excel which are NOT trial versions - they are full-featured but you do have to put up with some small ads to use Word and Excel. It also comes with 6 months of TrendMicro anti-virus, which I uninstalled and went with Avast Free instead.

Asus has included Altec Lansing stereo speakers but like all other notebook speakers, these are average and could use more power, but sound much better than my smaller netbook's speakers.

Comes with chiclet keyboard, wireless 802.11 b/g/n, 4-in-1 card reader, 3 USB ports, 1 VGA port, 1 DVI port, microphone jack, headphone jack, RJ45 LAN jack and even a HDMI port so this can be attached to your HDTV.

The keyboard also has the 10-key numeric keypad to the right, like full size keyboards have.

CON: My only complaint is the web cam, being 0.3 MP, it has bad video quality. It's good enough to see the person when you're Skypeing, but I sure wouldn't make a YouTube video using it. But since I/we were looking for a budget full-size computer and even though the 0.3 MP web cam doesn't quite cut it for me, it's good enough since I already know what my brother looks like. It is what it is, and if you're looking for a high def web cam, either don't choose this computer or add an external cam.

Don't bother looking for an SSI EEB chassis. Almost all are built for Intel boards where the system will spend its life basking in a dreary, poorly lit computer room while being pummeled by gale force winds from whiny rack style fans.

Instead look for water cooled solution from Corsair (the common review), or even better use the Coolermaster 812 with vapor chamber tech to keep your lga2011 xeon 8 core processor cool. If you use air cooling look for a chassis that exhausts to the top or top rear and mount your cpu sinks so the air flows from bottom to top. This will allow better cooling to the second processor. Overall under extreme maximum load I get 63C.

Don'y use intel lga2011 heat sinks they are crap. Was getting 86C before using all intel stuff.

Dell XPS L501X Review

I have had the dell XPS L501X since 2010, i have never been comfortable with any other laptop. It is great laptop. The performance is fantastic except for the new touchpad driver. I hope they go back to the original touchpad driver, it stopped some feature on the touchpad button the hot key is not responsive with the new updated driver.
Other than that I would recommend this product to my family members.
I customized adding Bluetooth, blueray video player, and 2GB video card.
Boy this is the laptop.

personally I prefer windows to mac primarily because windows is better with home video and other networked applications based on my experience. However, one problem with windows based pcs from dell amd hp is their really poor design amd general ergonomics. I still believe when it comes to design and build nothimg touches an apple mac book pro.

However, after coming very close to getting a 17 inch mac book I decided to go with a windows 7 based vaio Fw. the one I got has slightly better specs than the one here. I have the full HD screen and a blu ray writer. Here is why i believe this is an exellent notebook;

1. simply the best looking large screen windows based notebook. Kudos to Sony for excellent styling. (Aesthetics is a toss up between Mac Pro and Vaio FW for me)

2. excellent build quality. way better than my dell latitude from work or my wife's hp from work. The construction is solid. Kudos to Sony engineering for excellent construction (Apple Mac Pro is #1, Vaio is #2 in my books for this criteria)

3. screen size is a perfect 16:9 aspect ratio. Perfect for movies. (The Vaio FW is #1 in my opinion, this screen was designed for multi-media use)

4. blu ray looks fantastic and it is a breeze to connect it to my tv using the hdmi cable. One cable for audio and video. (Vaio FW is #1 for multi-media, hands down!)

5. It comes with 64 bit windows 7 and I upgraded the hardware to 8 GB Ram for blazing performance when combined with the 1 gb grapics card. (Windows 7 64 bit is the best OS in my books, All said and done)

6. came clean with no crapware!

7. sony laptops in my opinion have the best key boards. (Again, Sony created the chicklet style keyboard (not Apple) and if you like it, this is the best)

8. battery is OK. 3.5 hours on such a powerful machine is not bad.

all in all this a superb combination of performance, styling, features and software. do compare this with HP and Dell and decide which you prefer. I bet most will pick the Vaio because of the better build quality, better screen (1080p and true 16:9 size) and aesthetics. Also, compared to a Dell Lattitude that I had from work the Vaio runs much quieter and faster although both have similar hardware specs. The DVD drive on the Dell was atrocious (Dell also did not have a Blu Ray drive).

Given that Sony was one of the prime drivers and developers of the Blu Ray format, one would expect their Notebooks to have the best Blu Ray performance, or at least as good any anyone else out there.
