Photo Manager 12 [Old Version] Review

I upgraded from 9 to 12. It was a learning experience. Many more bells and whistles than the older version - to be expected. The only complaint that I have is that the software has the occasional lockup and I think it is due to my trying to do things too quickly. For example when I copy files from the hard drive to a DVD, I must make sure that all folders are displayed on the DVD before attempting a drag and drop from the hard drive. Otherwise PM 12 doesn't like it, and will lockup.

Overall, I am very happy with this laptop. It has a lot to offer for such a modest price! In spite of a few minor complaints, this is a great system, worth more than the asking price. I was very much attracted by the price but was a little wary - I was unsure what compromise might have been made to drive down the price. Did not want to spend too much because I only need a light-duty machine for Internet, E-Mail, and playing DVD movies while away from home traveling.

The first thing I noticed when it came out of the box is how light it was, but it also did not have the battery in it yet. It looks and feels really good and the weight is fairly well balanced. It is a large battery and appears to function quite well for hours without a recharge. The battery adds a good deal of weight, but it's a very light notebook for it's size. If your are looking for a laptop under 5 bls with a screen this size and a DVD drive I'm not sure you would find one under $300 or even $400 dollars.

The laptop's screen is very bright maybe too bright. Fairly easy to adjust the screen seetings via the function keys on the keyboard. I also found that when the screen is tilted back a little (away from you) the picture looks better and has more deep rich colors that really pop! I've enjoyed watching a DVD movie on it with no noticable issues.

It has a chicklet style keyboard, which in my opinion is good because of easier cleaning, but it is not does not light up, which could make it easier to see the keyboard in the light and the dark. At this price point I was not expecting a lighted keyboard. The touchpad is larger than I expected it occasionally gets in the way and moves the mouse and or clicks on an object. I'm thinking about just turning it off and using a wireless mouse.

The audio was not the best, but I was not expecting great sound. I boosted the levels to 100% in the application that came with the laptop (Sonic) and it did improve it to acceptable levels. The webcam is built-in which is nice, and it works about as well as what you would expect from a budget laptop which is not that good. I ended up making an extra $30 purchase for a pretty good Creative Live! Cam Socialize HD AF 720P 10MP Webcam
because it works well for Skype.

Speed is pretty good especially once you remove the moderate amounts of bloatware. If your not going to wipe and replace the operating system (Make sure to backup before you do) then I would recommend fully uninstalling the security software (virus, firewall, Microsoft Office trial etc...) that comes with the laptop via add/remove programs or Revo Uninstaller. I also would replace them with use a free products that have worked well in the past like avast! as a Antivirus. If you need or want an alternative to MS Office perhaps OpenOffice which is also free will meet your needs?

It took me 5 minutes to set the CalDigit VR to RAID 1, 1 TB. The setup instructions were very easy to understand and follow.

NOTE: During setup you need to decide what size 'block' you want. I chose 128k, as my files are mostly music and video, and range between 5 MB to 4 GB. You will want to choose a smaller block size if you are reading / writing smaller files.

I am using this drive to store 650 GB of video, audio, and photo. I have the drive connected via Firewire 800 to a Mac Mini - and both reside in my entertainment system.

The CalDigit drive is replacing a 1 TB Time Capsule that I was using as an external drive. Now I get to utilize the Time Capsule for what it was designed - backing up my Mac Mini.

iTunes, iPhoto, and iDVD - all really snap to life when accessing files on the CalDigit - it's really amazing.

My only complaint is the fan is fairly loud - not loud enough you can hear it during a movie, but loud enough you can hear it while watching television (assuming you don't watch television as loud as you watch a movie).

Overall I am extremely pleased with this unit, and would recommend it to anyone.

If you want a photo printer go with the i950
If you want a great all-round printer go with the i850.I owned both the i850 and i950, with the i850 first. The i850 is an great all-round printer printing fast text and photos. Using the Canon photo paper images look great, but simply lack the detail the i950 can provide with 6 inks and almost twice the nozzles and special photo inks. The extra nozzles not only make printing faster (at least for photos) but allow for more detail.On a picture, printed from Photoshop 6.0, that contained lots of details and color, but specifically a tree with multi-colored (shades) of bark - on the i850 the tree looked good with good detail, but on the i950 the tree came to life, was sharper, with more tree/bark detail and color variations becoming visible. There was no question, the i950 was better, noticably for photos.On mixed media (web page with graphics) the i950 and i850 were the same, but for some reason, the i850 was noticably faster. You get a larger black-ink cartridge w/ the i850 presumably favoring its intended role as a excellent all-round printer.If price is an issue, the i850 is the printer for you ... If photo quality is the most important, then the i950 is for you ... Can't make up your mind? Go with the i950, the extra money is worth the results. As an Information Technology guy, I know the value of inserting an uninterruptable power supply UPS) between your wall outlet and your network, computer and yes even home theater gear. Not all UPSs provide damage insurance or are as competent at the task; but, they all employ a lead acid storage battery. It is less expensive to replace the worn out battery than to fully replace the UPS. Batteries are not all that much different so it pays to look at a manufacturer's replacement and an alternative source too. However, I'd purchase the battery from a vendor who will restock at no charge should the UPS be the problem and not the battery.

I actually made this purchase almost three years ago. My UPS did not work with the new battery so the vendor shipped an exchange unit. It did not work either so we deduced the UPS was fried. The vendor happened to stock used UPS replacements. I reward great service so purchased a replacement UPS from the battery vendor. My battery plus replacement still cost still less than a new UPS.

The old battery and the replacement UPS worked so I stored the new battery for a couple of years. This year, with the UPS still functioning, I switched out the batteries, keeping the old as a spare. I plan to switch the batteries every now and then to keep both charged and ready to go in the event of a hurricane etc.

Do not fear the purchase of a UPS battery from a non-manufacturer source!
