This is my first Android experience. It isn't as slick as I expected. After a few days of use I am finding my way around, and this product works well enough. For this price I'm happy enough with it, but not delighted, and am considering returning it. The main drawback is that it does not have the Google Play (Android Market) application on it. Archos has their own application library which only shows applications they choose. A couple of the main apps I want to use (MLB.tv, Pandora, and Songza) are not available, which is *really* irritating, and I don't understand this choice. A device is severely diminished without its ecosystem. The Archos library has a lot of junk in there, and some of the apps don't even work on this device, so it's not like they publish only "quality" apps to protect you.I would give this product 5 stars if it had access to Google Play. Without that, I cannot give it more than three, and cannot recommend this device for anyone who wants to use more than the default apps. There's a fair chance that the app you want isn't available through the Archos store.
Pro:
- Great price.
- Device is fairly good looking, if somewhat unimaginative in the design. Very thin case.
- Battery life is good, I got over 6 hours of Angry Birds play on one charge.
Con:
- Can't get the Google Play app.
- The software feels a little unfinished in places. For example the settings app refers to cellular settings even though the device doesn't have cellular. There is a cellular accessory you can get for it, but without that the options should be hidden.
- The setting wizard has some irritating steps. The most annoying is a warning that says something like "the apps you're about to install are not guaranteed", but there is no information provided about what the apps actually are so that you can make a good decision. I installed them and didn't find anything damaging so far.
Notes:
- The wifi supports 802.11b/g/n but only on 2.4GHz. This device does not support 5GHz. Also the setup wizard does not let you add hidden networks, but the main settings page does, so just skip this part of the wizard if your wifi network is hidden.
- No GPS in this device.
UPDATE July 4, 2012:
Upgrading from 3 stars to 5 stars after I flashed custom firmware which added the Google Play app. This addresses the major downside to the device and I'm much happier. For the price, this is now an excellent and really useful device.
