Zalman CNPS7700-AlCu Aluminum/Copper CPU Cooler (Socket 478, 775, 754, 939, 940) Review

This cooler is HUGE. The fan, itself, is about the size of a CD in diameter. Add in another half an inch on all sides for the heatsink coils and you've got a monster. Plus, it's about 2-1/2 inches high. I'd highly recommend you visit a newsgroup relating to your system and see if others have fit it in. On my socket 478 Pentium 4, MSI 865PE-NEO2-FIS2 motherboard, and Lian Li PC-67USB case, it barely fit. No problem with the chip or motherboard. But, my case's power supply is a bit close (it probably violates the theoretical requirements for clearances). Also, this version of the cooler (AlCu) weighs 600 grams (the pure copper version weighs 918 grams). The maximum weight specified for the target motherboards is 450 grams. So, be very careful moving the computer once this is installed.

For installation, the socket 478 makes things easy. Unlike for the other sockets, with the 478, there's no need to remove the motherboard. Simply slide the two aluminum support bars through the top latches for the old heatsink/fan and screw the new cooler onto them. Easy. The package contains its own tube of thermal compound, so unless you want something like Arctic Silver, everything you need is included. Oops. Sorry. To clean the old thermal compound off your chip, you'll need a lint-free cloth and some kind of cleaning compound (I used 91% isopropyl alcohol - rubbing alcohol won't do).

Regarding performance, with the stock Intel fan, my computer used to idle at about 55 degrees Centigrade. Now, it idles at about 45 degrees. However, the best thing about this cooler is the sound. Under any load, my old Intel fan would ramp up to a loud, constant, screaming sound. With this one, it's a not-as-loud, lower-pitched, whirring. Much more tolerable. During normal operations, instead of the high-pitched noise of the Intel fan, I now have a low-pitched hum. I'm using Speedfan software to control the fan instead of the hardware Zalman provides. If you use the hardware, you'll have to manually control the speed.

Overall, I'm very happy with this cooler. I rate it at 5 stars out of 5. But, again, before buying, do some research to make sure this beast will physically fit into your system.
