Asus X401A-HCL122I Notebook PC Review

A nice little computer for the price. While it's not a super-mega gaming computer, it competently handles Windows, email, web browsing, most recent games on medium settings, and most general office work. It can play HD videos well, too. It tackled Blu-ray movies just fine with my own external USB BD drive and a copy of Cyberlink Power DVD.

It's lightweight for its generation, considering that it doesn't have an optical drive built in. The screen looks good, the keyboard works fine for my purposes (and I do a lot of writing). I was able to pry up the keyboard and put a 1TB drive in it, and it handled it perfectly (though the install process was a bit of a pain, and clearly not for novices). All told, I'm very happy with this computer considering the price I paid for it.

Another thing that drew me to this one was the lack of a keypad (the number pad on the right of most keyboards). As I said, I do a lot of writing, and on most laptops today that keypad pushes the QWERTY keys over to the left, which means my typing position isn't centered in relation to the screen. It really does make a difference to me that with this laptop, I'm centered on the keyboard and typing with my hands in the right position for my comfort.

I don't really love trackpads, no matter how nice they are. I consider a Logitech wireless mouse to be an essential laptop companion. Still, this trackpad works, and it's plenty sensitive. You don't need to fight with it to get it to register your touch.

So while there are more powerful computers out there, you can't beat the price and sensibility of this one when you consider all the factors. It's not the best laptop you'll find, but it's probably one of the better ones you'll find *for the price*.
