SHUTTLE XG41 Barebone System Review

I purchased one of these from another website recently and I'm just posting here because I think this little system is budget perfect for almost anything that doesn't require 3D gaming power, constant high stress (several minutes straight) on the CPU/RAM or laptop portability. If you are a typical user, this would probably be fine, if you are a PC enthusiast that overclocks, this would be a great PC for your parents.

This PC tends to run high on the CPU core temps during boot up or running Window's updates, so I would not suggest this PC for a power user or someone that does video rendering, but if you want to run a HTPC (Home Theater PC), use Microsoft Office, surf the internet, watch DVD's, watch Hulu, Netflix, use Skype etc., then this is a nice PC.

I run XBMC for my home theater software and while watching hi-def video's the CPU temperature stays in the high 20/low 30 degree Celsius range, although on boot up and running Window's updates, the temperature normally jumps to the 60's and sometimes even the low 70's Celsius. If you run the PRIME CPU & RAM stress test, the CPU temps will reach the 75+ mark in about 3 minutes, but face it, if you are looking at an inexpensive PC like this, you are not expecting a PC that can be overclocked etc.

You are going to have to have some level of computer expertise if you purchase this barebone system-meaning you need to purchase and add the CPU (65W max), RAM (8G max, 2 sticks), hard drive and optical drive and will need to know how to install an operating system. One awesome thing about this barebones system is that it comes with CPU thermal paste and every type of screw you will need to complete the install, so you don't need to go hunting for anything special. This PC has an external power supply that provides 90 watts of power, so you cannot put in a CPU that uses more than 65 watts of power or you will have all kinds of issues. I had a spare E6600 which worked nicely. Oh, and you can adjust the brightness of the blue LED at the power button in the BIOS - a handy tip if you use this PC for a HTPC and the room is dark...you don't want a bright blue LED shining and being distracting, right?
