Bose 101 Series II Music Monitor Speakers Review

First off, I have had home theater systems for the last twenty years, before DVD, before I had Laserdisc, etc., so I was just watching VHS, and C-Band Sat. I have had a lot of speaker systems during that time, most of the Bose brand. These 101 Series II are actually designed so you can mount them outside under porches, eaves, etc. The outside is a thick fiberglass material with 1/4 " mounts underneath, a nonremovable metal grill and so forth. So it was very surprising to me when I introduced them into my home theater and experienced them in my home. Unlike other Bose speakers I have had, these don't feature any type of articulated array, or direct/reflect design, these just point the speaker more or less forward like most speaker designs. Having various Bose systems before, including the 901's, The direct/reflect system is the best I have had experience with in REAL LIFE HOMES reproducing life like music, not square soundproof demo areas in electronics stores; having said that, these 101's are wonderful at separating the left and right channels of movie soundtracks, where you DON'T really want the sound to come from "everywhere". I like to hear the sounds in a Dolby or DTS soundtrack to go precisely where the sound designers who spent months on the film meant for the sound to go, and along with my Polk Audio center channel, and Bose 100 rear speakers, and Velodyne Sub, these 101's fit the bill, of course I direct all my low frequencies to my powered sub, so size of drivers is not a concern here. I think you too will be surprised at how an outdoor speaker can match your upper mid-level component speakers in sound quality.
