Gefen 2x1 DisplayPort KVM Switcher Review

This KVM didn't work for me. I was attempting to switch between two DisplayPort Macs, and the monitor was of the DVI variety. I used highly-rated adapters to facilitate the various connections. The Gefen didn't show or switch video. It wouldn't even switch USB. My previous KVMs could switch USB with or without any video cables attached to them. Not the Gefen. And one of the Gefen's USB-in ports seemed worn out despite being new, as it would only loosely grip the cable.

Previously, I used a Starview DVI KVM and it worked great, that is, until I upgraded to Macs that only use DisplayPorts, following which the switched video would periodically wig out. I thought about getting a Starview DisplayPort KVM, but the poor reviews steered me toward the Gefen. I can't tell you if the Starview DisplayPort KVM works any better (or at all), but I can tell you that, in general, Starview chassis are a lot more robust, heavier, with higher quality metal and rounded corners. The switches on the Starview are perfect, with large visible markings and LEDs. Compare this to the Gefen, which has the cheapest switch I've ever seen--just a needle-sized nub of plastic poking out of a tiny hole. You can see this switch in the product image. It feels as pathetic as it looks, and the associated LEDs are equally sad. On the plus side, the Gefen does have an IR remote, so I guess the idea is that you're not supposed to actually use that tiny button to do the switching. But in my case, searching for the remote is more trouble than hitting a button that's right in front of me. Perhaps if you keep your KVM far from arm's reach, you will appreciate the IR remote and prefer the Gefen (assuming you can get the KVM to work with your scenario).

I purchased the competing StarView DisplayPort KVM and it worked without issue. I didn't even have to reboot; just plugged the cables in and it worked as expected.
