CyberpowerPC Zeus Thunder SLC4200 Desktop (Gun Metal/Red) Review

I'll start off by saying I am an avid gamer, and having played Battlefield 3, Bioshock Infinite, Crysis 3, and Tera on the SLC4200, I can say I'm pretty impressed. Both Battlefield 3 and Bioshock Infinite runs at max settings (1920x1080) around a smooth 60 fps. Crysis 3 will hold up around there as well until you turn up the anti aliasing to beyond 4x or so (which is negligible in visual quality). I haven't been able to properly test any streaming as the upload speed at my current residence is atrocious, but the games are very playable while recording with Fraps. While I also do some fairly intensive video editing, I have not yet tested it, and will most likely update this review in the future.

The video card is an MSI GTX 670 2gb (not 570), and the processor is an i7 3770k, not whatever Apple processor Amazon says it comes with. Both run fairly cool during game play - I have not seen the video card run past 80C while playing any of the mentioned games. 800 watts is a bit of an overkill for this system but it does provide the window for an SLI upgrade. The case is very aesthetically pleasing, but in terms of noise levels it's decent. I would read some reviews on the NZXT Switch 810 if you're concerned with noise and cooling, as I lack the background in comparing its performance. The case sports some red LED eye candy and a nice soft white LED in the back so you can see what you're doing back there (switched on/off through a small button on the front panel).

If you're new to Windows 8 like myself, it does take a little while to get used to. You can download a program like ClassicShell to get the start button back, since 8 removes the iconic menu. In terms of compatibility, there hasn't been any issues with any of the games or programs I've used thus far (e.g Photoshop, FL Studio).

If you're also new to an SSD like I was, you'll be amazed at its write speeds and just how fast it boots up Windows (~10 seconds). The 16gb ram certainly helps if you're doing a lot of multitasking. I would imagine this combined with the 3770k to perform video editing or any multimedia production software extremely well. I will update this review in the future after having done some Adobe After Effects and Premiere work.

Now onto the minor issue I ran into. The case comes with an Aerocool V12XT touchscreen panel that can be used to control the fan speeds and monitor the temperatures of the CPU, video card, and hard drive. While it's very flashy, my unit came with the screen slightly pushed into the case at an angle. In other words, the panel isn't perfectly aligned with the case and I have had no luck in pushing it out from the inside. It still works, but it's visually unappealing as it looks like I had punched it in on one side. Also in regards to the panel, I noticed it starts to beep constantly when any component reaches a certain "alarm" threshold. This occurred mainly for the video card when it detected temperatures exceeding 55C (which is one, very inaccurate, and two, not a dangerous temperature to be hovering around). If you find this to be irritating like I did, just touch and hold the temperature on the right for three seconds. When it starts blinking, you can set the "alarm temperature" by touching the + button in the middle until your desired temperature. For an accurate temperature reading of your video card, use a program like EVGA Precision.

Other than that, the computer itself is a beast of a machine. I had spent a long time researching what computer to buy that will be worth the investment for at least 3 years. While technology advances at an incredible rate, I'm certain this rig will meet my expectations for the years to come.

PROS

- Runs every modern game at max settings at highly playable FPS
- Highly capable in streaming/recording
- More than adequate cooling
- Visually stunning case
- USB ports everywhere, including 4 USB 3.0 ports
- Value. I bought it at $1699 here at Amazon. The price has been fluctuating a lot so watch it every so often if you're interested in buying it.

CONS

- Size. It's a full size tower so make sure you have the room to accommodate it
- Noise levels could be better, but it's nothing to be concerned about at all
- AeroCool touch panel takes some fiddling around to operate

If you're torn between this and the SLC4600, unless the price of the SLC4600 drops back down to $1900, I would stick with the SLC4200. The SLC4600's main upgrades are the GTX 680 and i7 3820. The 680 performs roughly 5% better than the 670; thus, in terms of its performance/value, the 680 is not worth the upgrade over a 670. The i7 3820 is more future proof in a sense, but unless you're planning on adding 2-3 more video cards into that rig, the 3770k is a clear winner in regards to performance/value.
