I got this drive for my Windows 7 system. The installation was very simple. When you connect the drive to a USB 2.0 port, you can access the "Public" partition. This partition (only about 450MB) contains the software tools. You have the option of installing the "Secure Lock Manager" software and encrypting the drive (feature not on by default). Subsequent machines don't need to install this software (if you move it around). There is a password login on the partition that lets you access the device if you have the password. You just need to "set up" the drive once. Also, you can easily convert the drive to NTFS (to support files > 4GB).
One nice feature I like is that it includes a behavior selection for password failed attempts. You can select how many failed attempts triggers the action. This provides additional protection against brute-force attempts to penetrate the password.
Now - a small comment about the partition. I know you lose 450MB. But this isn't as bad as some manufacturers. I've seen these partitions up to 20GB on some drives (and their software was useless). Here, Buffalo uses 450MB, but at least the tools are actually usable.
Now a word about the encryption. You can switch the encryption mode on and off at anytime. This actually doesn't scramble the data on the drives. What it does (not documented) is to encrypt the index table and the sector headers. So this isn't really bullet-proof encryption. But in truth, unless you're protecting some serious corporate secrets or work for the intelligence community, this should be fine. What it buys is a very quick transfer of data, which is "mostly" scrambled.
I'd buy this again. It works as advertised.
