The product does take some assembly, but once it is assembled and in place, it does the job admirably. Frankly, I have been very surprised at the difference a hood has made. Images appear more saturated and with greater detail. If you have gone to the trouble of getting an NEC monitor and calibrating it, you are not getting the full value of it without this hood.

I put the perceptual improvement that the hood has given me as being as great as at least 10% or more. The reasons for the improvement I suspect, include:

1. Hood provides a visual, black border around the image, with a similar effect to a physical matt - ie the edges of your images are perceptually darker
2. Removal (for me) of light spill from my 17" Macbook Pro (the screen of which, when viewed in comparison to the monitor with hood, almost appears to have a grey film over it)
3. Greater retinal response as the eye is less affected by surrounding light sources, and so is more likely to be seeing what is on the screen
4. Reduced impact of surface reflections from ceiling, walls, desktop, shirt etc.

All this adds up to is improved image saturation and contrast.

In summary, if you want to remove variation from your workflow and increase your chances of printing what you see on your monitor (which is what optimising your workflow should be all about), I think that the hood is an absolutely essential accessory. Difficulties with assembly/instruction are really only a minor distraction.
